You Can Be a Wesley @ Paradise

Two of us from EC went to two shows tonight. First up…
You Can Be a Wesley @ Paradise
You Can Be a Wesley performed on Friday at the Paradise as part of the Emergenza Battle of the Bands. I hate the ‘Battle of the Band’ format, but You Can Be a Wesley’s put together a good performance.
First off, check out the Wesley’s music here because I’m terrible at nor do I enjoy trying to fit bands into genres.
The Wesley’s use quite a bit of studio effects on their recordings and whenever a band does that I’m always a bit worried about how it will translate to a live show. Luckily, the Wesley’s sound is just about as good live as it is on their recordings. All of the members provide tight instrumentation to provide a rather understated (but effective) sound. Lead singer Saara Untracht-Oakner’s voice is manipulated and double tracked on a few of the Wesley’s tracks, but her distinct vocals were no less distinct live. The lyrics were a bit harder to understand, but that goes with the territory and is hardly a complaint. The drumming and guitar playing is not flashy, but each equally adds to their overall sound.
When you go to see You Can Be a Wesley you’re not going to hear extended solos, or altered live versions of their songs, but you will hear a good band focused on playing well live. So, go see them.
